Sir, - At Mass in my parish church last Sunday the congregation was stunned into an uneasy silence by a most powerful sermon delivered by the local curate. He spoke of Thursday's Prime Time documentary on St Teresa's Gardens, and pointed out the glaring lack of comment by politicians, the media and the public in general in the aftermath of the screening of the programme.

I watched the programme in question and was left with a feeling of disgust and shame that such living conditions exist for fellow citizens of our capital city. Given the "boom" economy we're experiencing, our Government should hang its head in shame for allowing such degradation of human beings to continue to be ignored.

What has become of us as a nation? How can this be happening, let alone be tolerated, in the year 2001? - Yours, etc.,
