Inter-Church Communion

Sir, - A solution to the "problem" of inter-church communion posed by G.H. Duggan (February 8th) is simply not to take dogmatic theologians too seriously. It might be useful to consider that "dogma" is a collection of agreed opinions which makes up the official teaching of the Catholic Church. It doesn't represent the actual living faith of any one person. It is something to which we are encouraged to aspire. Its richness stems precisely from the fact that it is the collective faith perspectives of many over a vast time-span, teased out by the tools of logic.

Humans are more than logical. I believe that Christ, like most of us, is loved more for his compassion than his logic. Ironically, it is only by following our hearts that we allow dogma to evolve into a vibrant, living faith, relevant to us as the human face of the Catholic Church. - Yours, etc.,
