Sir, - I was rather surprised to read (The Irish Times, October 2nd) that the president of the Irish Countrywomen's Association criticised the Catholic bishops for issuing their document on the Eucharist because it was "divisive rather than inclusive". I would have thought it perfectly acceptable and necessary for the bishops to issue guidelines for Catholics on this important doctrine. May we take it that the president has consulted her members on this matter?
Mrs Coyle seems to be unaware of the many statements issued by the bishops on poverty which, of course, do not receive the same media coverage as more controversial matters.
I have to add that I was very disappointed that the ICA, in its submission on the Budget, failed to support the many women who would prefer to look after their own children at home with some financial assistance. Were these women even mentioned? On the other hand, it is suggested that their husbands be asked to pay tax to cover child-care costs for others. - Yours, etc., Mrs Mary Stewart,
Ardeskin, Donegal Town.
