Madam, - Frank Byrne (March 9th) implicitly demands an international men's day to match what he calls the "hoopla" of International Women's Day. At present it is probably not necessary to have an international men's day. When, some time in the future, nearly all the top jobs are held by women and 80 to 90 per cent of the public representatives in the parliaments of the world are female it might be necessary to have an international men's day. I do not, however, see that happening soon.
- Yours, etc,
A LEAVY, Shielmartin Drive, Dublin 13.
Madam, - International Women's Day is not an excuse for all the women in the world to have a mass party. It is a day set aside each year to highlight the social, legal and political prejudices that still exist, despite many improvements, against women all over the world.
If there was an international men's day what would be highlighted? The fact that we still do live in a patriarchal society; that men still get paid more than their female counterparts; that men still hold the top positions in the top professions?
- Yours, etc,
LAUREN KIERANS, Athgarvan, Co Kildare.
