Sir, – As you note in your editorial "The Brexit debate – from hyperbole to hysteria" (May 19th), the economic arguments against Britain leaving are compelling.
Yet I fear that the argument may be won or lost on more emotional grounds.
There has been a lamentable erosion of the European spirit, and the EU’s citizens feel increasingly alienated from what they perceive to be a remote and uncaring bureaucracy.
Even if Britain stays, the EU will still face a challenge in reconnecting with the people. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Now that Enda Kenny TD has announced that he will speak several times in the UK during the EU referendum campaign and also send a number of his Cabinet members to the UK as well, I am assuming that in the next referendum in the Republic it will be acceptable, and not considered to be uninvited interference, for David Cameron and several ministers from 10 Downing Street to visit the Republic to campaign.
The UK and the Republic are getting closer by the day.
Gradually the separation of 1921 is being reversed. – Yours, etc,
