Madam, - Further to Kevin Myers's query (An Irishman's Diary, January 31st) and Michael McGuire's response (February 7th) there is no doubt the Irish government knew about the "Final Solution" in early 1943.
Dermot Keogh, in his book Jews in Twentieth Century Ireland, records a telegram from Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog to Éamon de Valera on January 5th 1943: "American State Department announced 2 million European Jews perished, five million threatened with extermination. Deportations. . . to Polish ghettoes thence centres. Mass executions continue unabated. . ."
That telegram was but one of many sources of similar information to which the government had access early in 1943. - Yours, etc.,
