Ireland light, or dark Ireland?

Sir – We hear, not for the first time, that light pollution in Ireland means that only five per cent of Ireland has pristine night skies free from artificial light (Kevin O’Sullivan, Home News, March 9th).

What a tourism opportunity; with visitors flocking to that magical place on unlit bicycles and cars, pilgrims stumbling along boreens to the source, using those torches shaded from above as during the Emergency. There, they would gaze at the Milky Way in all its splendour, before returning somehow to their sleep-deprived home environment.

“Ireland Lite” is lying out there in the shadows waiting to be exploited. Black tea/coffee or 70 per cent dark chocolate, anyone? – Yours, etc,

PATRICK JUDGE,
