Sir, - Whether Limerick, Dublin or Cork win the Great Litter Letter Competition, Urban Section, I would like to say a word in favour of us Rural Litterers, Culchie Section. Our efforts towards decorating the roadsides, hedges and river banks with a profusion of multicoloured bunting to welcome tourists to our otherwise boringly beautiful green land must not be allowed to go unnoticed.
As a help in our efforts to be considered favourably by the competition judges we have even composed a slogan which we hope will replace that old and rather worn-out "Cead Mile Failte" with the much more relevant (and prevalent) "Cead Mile Bruscar".
We country litter-lads are determined that the cities will be given a good run for their titles. Already our boys are out doing their best and with the help of the county council hedge-hackers the roadsides are being cut back to give a clearer view of what we are doing to decorate the rural scenery. We do not intend to give up easily. - Yours etc.,
Jack O'Connell, Ballydehob, Co Cork.
