Sir, - Congratulations to Bill Tormey on his candour (June 17th). I was beginning to believe that I was alone in seeing through the myth of Irish neutrality. He is correct when he says "Neutrality is the hiding place of the irresponsible." May I add that it is also the haven of the insular, the refuge of the smug and a vehicle for unworthy politics.
Whenever the question of Irish neutrality arises, I am reminded of the words of an astute politician, "The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who remain neutral in times of conflict." - Yours, etc., Don Heenan,
Rathvilly, Co. Carlow.
