Sir, - On reapplying for my third Irish passport I have encountered a grave discrimination, as my daughter, who was born in Perth, Australia, in 1989, cannot be entered on it, despite being noted on my previous passport by the Irish Consul in Perth.
The reason why? I was born in England, therefore, despite holding an Irish passport, voting on constitutional matters, and living here on and off for 24 years since the age of four, cannot automatically pass on my Irish nationality to my daughter. A second class Irish national has been created. If I was born anywhere in Ireland this would not be the case.
Ian Paisley, should he decide to apply for an Irish passport, can have any young offspring born outside this island, added to his passport. I, a holder of an Irish passport since the age of 13, cannot!
If Mary Robinson was born in England, and decided to have another child in Geneva, she could not add that child's name to her Irish passport, despite being a former President of Ireland.
I was told that this situation is due to the law. The law is an ass. - Yours, etc., Sandra Moore,
Dunshaughlin, Co Meath.
