Madam, - I write in response to the article entitled "Strong interest in Irish translation jobs in EU" (The Irish Times, June 26th). I would like to inform your readers of the translation courses available at the moment in the Irish language.
Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge at NUI Galway, over the past five years, has developed a range of diploma and master's courses in translation studies. We have a diploma in translation skills, a two year part-time course, running in Galway, Kerry and Donegal at the moment.
Since 2001 we have been running a master's in translation studies with a module on interpretation - probably the only interpretation training available in the Irish language. Students graduate with the skills to become translators, interpreters or both.
Other institutions in the country also run successful postgraduate translation courses. DCU runs an MA in translation studies and the GMIT has an MSc in applied Irish and translation.
In September, for the first time, an undergraduate translation course will be established by Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge in NUI Galway as part of the BA (Arts). For more information see www.acadamh.ie or call (091) 869022. - Is mise,
MAIRÉAD NÍ CHATHÁIN, Feidhmeannach Aistriúcháin, Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, Gaillimh.
