Irishness of Christian Aid

Madam, - I have been reading with great interest Paul Cullen's series of reports on Irish overseas aid. I was surprised, however, to see Christian Aid being listed among "Irish branches of a foreign NGOs" (The Irish Times, November 14th).

Christian Aid Ireland is the official relief and development agency of seven Irish Churches: the Church of Ireland, the Methodist Church in Ireland, the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, the non-subscribing Presbyterian Church in Ireland, the Moravian Church, the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and the Salvation Army. Our colleagues in Britain are likewise sponsored by a diverse range of churches there.

The work that began in Ireland 60 years ago with giving aid to refugees from continental Europe in the aftermath of the second World War continues today, with the support of the Irish public, in the poorest communities in more than 50 countries around the world, regardless of religion. - Yours, etc,

ADRIAN HORSMAN, Communications & Media Manager, Christian Aid Ireland, Dublin 2.
