Sir, - In your issue of July 29th you published a report by Michael Jansen on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in which it was stated: "Before 1967, 100,000 Syrians lived in more than 100 villages and hamlets which were razed by Israel when it captured the Heights and drove out the populace." Your reporter added that 16,000 Druze inhabitants had been permitted to remain in the area.
On July 31st you published an article by the Israeli ambassador, Mr Zvi Gabay, in which he described John V. Whitbeck's allegation that Israel was involved in ethnic cleansing as "outrageous and abhorrent".
May I suggest that in future you might relegate the contributions of Mr Gabay to the Letters page, where the equally credible statements of the Turkish embassy denying the Armenian genocide have traditionally appeared? - Yours, etc.,
