Sir, - I would like to make a correction to the report from Rome by Paddy Agnew, "European vote seen as crucial for fortunes of Italian parties (The Irish Times, June 2nd).
It is not correct to say that Carlo Azeglio Ciampi is the first President of the Italian Republic who is not a Christian Democrat. Before him the following presidents also had not been: Luigi Einaudi (1948-55, Liberal); Giuseppe Saragat (1964-71, Social Democrat); Sandro Pertini (1978-85, Socialist). - Yours etc.,
Ferdinando Zezza, Italian Ambassador, Dublin.
