Madam, – William Reville (Science Today, June 4th) writes about the need to get more young people interested in careers in science, engineering, and technology (SET).

Last year, I graduated from NUI Galway with a degree in microbiology. Since then, I have been trying to find work and have so far been unsuccessful. I count myself lucky if somebody I apply to bothers to send a “not interested” letter.

Before trying to find out how we can persuade young people to take up science, perhaps something should be done to enable those who already did to find work. – Yours, etc,
