Sir - Considerations of space prevented Richard Roche (An Irishman's Diary, May 4th) from including even more notable Irish journalists in the US. However, there is one omission which I cannot let pass.

Born in 1842, as a young revolutionary he organised the military Fenians in 1866. He was arrested, imprisoned and eventually released on condition of going to the US, where he became a mainstay of the New York Herald. For 67 years he plotted, planned and survived various disasters to bring about an independent Ireland, scoring such successes as the Catalpa rescue along the way. In old age he penned his Recollections of an Irish Rebel - still a good read - and died in 1928, having seen many of his dreams come true. Who was he? John Devoy. - Yours, etc.,
