Sir, - I have just read in The Irish Times (August 5th) that John Hume is seriously considering standing for the Presidency and I must admit that I am delighted. Here, at last, is someone who is more than capable of filling Mary Robinson's shoes. The fact that he is not only from Northern Ireland but is one of the foremost and best-known leaders trying to solve the intractable Northern problem in a peaceful way adds massive weight to his potential Presidential campaign.
While I'm sure other candidates will have the talents and expertise for the job, common sense tells me that Mr Hume's experience, suffering, willingness to take risks, and particular God-given abilities make him the ideal candidate for the post.
I hope he goes for it. - Yours, etc.,
Jackie Robinson PP,
Aghaboe, Co Laois.
