Madam, - Kevin Myers claims (An Irishman's Diary, September 2nd) that John Kerry is morally inconsistent because he fought in Vietnam and subsequently denounced the US involvement in the war. Surely even somebody as bereft of objectivity as Mr Myers can see the crucial point: it precisely because he fought in the war that John Kerry's denunciation deserves some respect.
Likewise, because George Bush so assiduously avoided combat, we must treat with some caution his attempts to wrap himself in the star-spangled banner.- Yours, etc.,
