Sir, - Have you noticed the text of the Courts (Supplemental Provisions) (Amendment) Bill which got parliamentary approval last week? Section 2 reads: "Where a judge of the High Court who was appointed on the 1st day of October 1991 vacates his office on the 9th day of July 2000 he shall be deemed. . .to have vacated his office after 15 years' service."

For the benefit of those who do not understand New-Age mathematics or sophisticated drafting, this means that a judge with approximately nine years' service can qualify for full pension. Why? Never mind. Is it not wonderful to find such magnanimity in Dail Eireann during a week of severe judicial turbulence? - Yours, etc.,
