Sir, - May I register my disgust at Minister Woods with his court action with the Sinnott family. First of all, any family or individual in such a situation deserves all the support that can be provided whether it is medical, educational or financial.
In this case we had the Minister running to the Supreme Court for his hollow victory, and then had him trying to change direction when there was a groundswell of public outrage.
Minister Woods is a member of what is by any standard the most arrogant Government this country has ever seen. We are repeatedly told how well the country is doing under this Government, but it should be remembered that over the past three or four years the country prospered on the groundwork and decisions taken by the Rainbow Coalition.
With the spendthrift mentality of the present Government I hope we don't reap the benefits of its decisions in another three or four years. Minister Woods and many of the present Government were in power when hundreds of millions were banked offshore to evade tax and I don't see any of the present Government running to the courts to seek prison sentences for those involved.
This is the same arrogant Government that told us our nurses were a special case but it couldn't pay them outside the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness. Neither could it pay our junior doctors or teachers.
I hope all those groups remember that at the next election. The present arrogant Government had no problem paying their own salaries and pensions.
The Sinnotts and many others in similar circumstances should not be neglected whatever the price. - Yours, etc.,
John Kinsella, New Ross, Co Wexford.
