Sir, – David Murnane (August 15th) can keep his bindweed at bay by unwinding it from the foliage, putting it intact into a small plastic bag, spraying it with a systemic weedkiller, tying the bag and leaving in situ until the plant dies back. Three seasons of treatment will have a dramatic effect. Minor repeat treatments are required annually. As a gardener he will know that a well-kept plot is only on short-term loan from the wilderness. – Yours, etc,
