Sir, – Readers should not block any vents in the house without checking why they were put there (“Make a snap decision and protect your home from cold and flood”, Property, January 24th). It may be dangerous if there is a gas fire or combustion device. Some of these dangers, related to carbon monoxide poisoning, are mentioned in the article on page 4 of the same Property supplement. Blocking vents may pose an additional risk associated with radon dispersal in some older houses.

Readers should consult Bord Gáis, or one of its registered installers before blocking any vents, or refer to its guidelines online. They should consult the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII) in relation to radon. – Yours, etc,
