Madam, – I’m a 26-year-old newly qualified lawyer, out of work for almost a year. I’ve applied for 300 jobs, getting only a handful of responses and three interviews. I have been in touch with my local representatives for some advice and help but they seem indifferent. Needless to say, they won’t be getting my vote next time round.
I have also spent several weeks "getting out there knocking on doors" as Bill Cullen on last Friday's Late Late Showsuggests but to no avail. Indeed most employers had a look of bewilderment on their face when I called at their door looking for a job. "We're struggling to survive, let alone taking on more staff", employer after employer told me as I trawled the streets of Dublin with a stack of CVs in my hand.
There’s simply no work in the legal industry. I have also applied for jobs in several different sectors but to no avail. I’ve tried bars, restaurants, hotels, etc, only to be told that I’m unsuited to the work due to my education and experience. Nothing seems to work!
Does Mr Cullen honestly believe that the 500,000 people out of work can find employment by “knocking on doors”? If so, he’s living in fantasy land. I would challenge Mr Cullen to spend an afternoon “knocking on doors” with me so I can educate him about what’s really going on in this country.
I doubt he’ll take up my offer, though, who knows, maybe he’ll offer me a job instead! – Yours, etc,
