Sir, - I could not agree more with Liam Kidney (October 25th), about the need to reassess the potential opportunity for the re-development of what Gerry Thornley called our "storied old ground". I too had the honour of watching a memorable Irish performance against England. I too stuck around the stadium afterwards, soaking up the win and steadying my nerves with a few pints of plain.
I nearly choked when I saw, within the white fenced-off area, Bertie Ahern emerging from one of the corporate hospitality tents. I wondered what he was thinking. That perhaps he should have brought the cheque book with him to present another £60 million over three years to develop a stadium in Dublin, or perhaps that maybe there actually are other sports played by Irishmen with the same passion and will to win that are not "our own national games". - Yours, etc.,
Jonathan Logue, Donnybrook, Dublin 4.
