Sir, - It's true the condition of the river Dodder is a disgrace. However the rubbish is not confined to the river; it also appears in your newspaper, witness the letter from Dr. Rory P. O'Hanlon of the Irish Wildlife Trust (May 15th). His proposal to remove rubbish from the river and dump it on the streets of Dublin is childish. But even if Dr. O'Hanlon and the Irish Wildlife Trust goes ahead with this folly, where are the offices of Dublin County Council? It strikes me that Dr. O'Hanlon has as little grasp of the rubbish problem as he has of the local authority arrangements in the greater Dublin area. Rubbish and littering generally is not done by local authorities but by locals. Would it not serve the countryside and its wildlife better if the Trust educated the population rather than littering the city themselves. I despair for the future of our wildlife if Dr. O'Hanlon's letter represents the conservation policies of the Irish Wildlife Trust. - Yours, etc., Gerry Doyle,
Dundrum, Dublin 16.
