'Little Irelander' GAA approach

Madam, – Donal Evoy’s letter (June 15th) criticising Brian O‘Connor’s article on the GAA, one of Ireland’s three sacred cows, (remember the Catholic Church and Fianna Fáil) had me searching through the recycling bin to recover Monday’s Sports section.

In an effort to balance the hostility that will inevitably follow, I would like to put on record the fact that I found the article insightful and honest.

Mr O’Connor only dealt with the present, but could have gone back a few  years to report on the “little Irelanders” on watch outside Dalymount Park and Lansdowne   spying on any GAA member who had the temerity to support their country.

The GAA, like the Catholic Church, was eventually dragged kicking and screaming into the 20th century. One can still hear the screams north of the Border. –   Yours, etc,
