Sir, - Seamus O Brogain (January 6th) is only partly correct about Lord Edward FitzGerald.
Lord Edward did indeed renounce his title, at a convivial dinner in Paris in November 1792. However, he resumed using it on his return to Ireland. His last will begins: "I, Lord Edward FitzGerald, do make this as my last will and testament." - Yours, etc.,
Peter Smithwick, The Old Rectory, Inistioge, Co Kilkenny.
