Madam, - Am I the only person to find this year's Mansion House fuel fund appeal astonishing? In a letter of appeal, the Lord Mayor of Dublin is asking for donations "to relieve the suffering by our poor at Christmas" and goes on to say "the more you send the less our poor will suffer". We are asked to assist the poor in not having to face "another miserable day in a freezing room".

I have no doubt that this is indeed the plight of many of our citizens, and agree that such basic human comfort ought to be provided. My astonishment comes from the fact that the first committee member named at the top of the letter is "An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern TD".

It truly defies logic that the Taoiseach is a member of a committee seeking charitable donations to provide basic and essential provisions for our most vulnerable citizens. What is he thinking? What are we to think? - Yours, etc,
