Madam, - The most appropriate centenary tribute from Dublin to Louis MacNeice would be a bronze plaque with the words of his poem Dublin (complete) on O'Connell Bridge for passers-by to enjoy.
Much of the poem is historical, but to this day
The lights jig in the river
With a concertina movement
And the sun comes up in
the morning
Like barley-sugar on
the water. - Yours, etc,
C. WALKER, Ardkeel, Roscommon.
Madam, - Enda Longley (January 10th) seeks to "correct" my alleged comments about Carrickfergus's failure to commemorate the Louis MacNeice centenary.
In my letter (January 8th) I simply pointed to the complete absence of any reference to MacNeice in the Passport to Carrickfergus 2007 promotional brochure published by Carrickfergus Borough Council.
That omission is all the more puzzling given the local programme outlined by Dr Longley, including an exhibition in the superb Carrickfergus Museum and Civic Centre. It sounds wonderful. I'm sorry I and many other potential visitors to Carrick missed it. - Yours, etc,
SEAMUS DOOLEY, St Thomas Road, Dublin 8.
