Sir, - As Irish-Americans we are appalled by the Louise Woodward decision, and our hearts go out to her and all concerned. We question this jury's verdict every bit as much as we question that of the O.J. Simpson jury.
Is it possible that the court's inability to provide the transcript requested late on Thursday contributed to the jury's inability to reach what the world would regard as the correct verdict, i.e. innocent? This, if so, might well constitute grounds for appeal.
As regards the rampant criticism of the American justice system that has come across, particularly on the Sky Television coverage of this case - yes, the system has failed Louise. There is, however, an appeal system, and we are confident that means will be found to support her through that process.
This sorry episode can't help but bring to mind some egregious British miscarriages of justice - yes, it's not only the American system that falls down. Recall the Guildford Four, Birmingham Six and other innocents who served long years before being freed and who still await just compensation. The agony of Louise Woodward and her family and supporters quite accurately reflects the agony of many Irish and other victims of British justice gone wrong. All persons so victimised deserve our concern and support. - Yours, etc.,
Clonbur, Co Galway.
