Sir, - After the trauma for both parents and au pair in the Louise Woodward case, many working parents are thinking about what could go wrong in their childcare arrangements, and may be feeling doubtful and powerless. Parents can, however, arm themselves with the most valuable tools - correct information and professional advice.
The National Children's Nurseries Association publishes a parents' booklet advising what questions to ask and what to look for when selecting a day nursery. We have recently appointed a national adviser who can assist parents with their queries.
Since last January, when pre-school regulations were signed into law, health boards have responsibility for inspecting certain childcare services. However, the procedure appears to be hampered by the Government's lack of financial commitment to implementing these regulations. We call on the Government to address this situation immediately. - Yours, etc.
