Madam, - I agree with previous correspondents that the Louis MacNeice centenary celebrations were something of a hit-and-miss affair. Perhaps the most disappointing omission was the complete absence of any reference to MacNeice in the Passport to Carrickfergus 2007 promotional brochure published by Carrickfergus Borough Council.

Having tried unsuccessfully to buy a collection of MacNeice's work in Carrick 15 years ago, I was not entirely surprised. - Yours, etc,

Madam, - I agree with Eoin Dillon (January 5th) about a memorial to MacNeice in Dublin, but fear the poet himself may have been prescient in his fine poem Dublin:

"This never was my town,

I was not born or bred

Nor schooled here and

she will not

Have me alive or dead."
