A chara, – The planned salmon farming in Galway Bay is a folly which will further destabilise our coastal communities.
The most conservative estimates are that 45,000 tonnes of rendered marine protein would be required for the harvest. Millions of tonnes of our Atlantic margin sea bed will be hoovered up in the most indiscriminate and unsustainable fisheries practice ever devised, leaving in its wake an ecological catastrophe.
The result being that nearly everyone’s a loser – seabirds, whitefish, salmonids and coastal fisheries – apart, of course, from the Norwegian multinationals that control the world’s salmon farms. They have access to an inexpensive source of protein and let the tides take care of the detritus.
Despite this, Bord Iascaigh Mhara continues to promote fake salmon as sustainable. – Yours, etc,
