Making cyclists wear helmets

Sir, – This debate on wearing bicycle helmets is driving me crazy. If we give in to the bicycle helmet brigade, they will progress to making us wear helmets when driving cars, walking in icy weather, playing golf, after consumption of any alcohol and eventually we will have to wear helmets in bed at night in case the ceiling caves in.

Why not simply allow people make their own decisions about their personal safety? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I must applaud Ben Eustace (January 24th) for pointing out the dangers pedestrians pose to cyclists and his call for re-education on cycling.

As a commuting cyclist in Dublin I am required to take avoidance action to prevent a collision with pedestrians on an almost daily basis. It is hard to know who to despair of most, those unaware pedestrians who step off the kerb with nary a casual glance over their shoulder or the more determined pedestrians who see me approaching, look into my eyes and then decide to step directly into my path regardless. – Yours, etc,
