Sir, - As we stumble towards the Millennium here in Ireland, the capitals of Europe are putting the final touches to their celebrations and monuments. These are symbols of how far they have come and visions of where they are heading.
Here in Dublin we are getting a second pedestrian bridge and a boardwalk on our quays, and the Liffey's bridges are to be lit up - the sort of things which most European capitals have had since the 1960s and 1970s.
Onwards and upwards? Well, sort of ... maybe. Damn, I miss that spike already. - Yours, etc.,
