Sir, - It is very disturbing to read that Dean Robert McCarthy is considering allowing the Roman Catholic Mass to be held in St Patrick's Cathedral. This is contrary to the 39 Articles of his church, which teach, among other things, that the Mass is a blasphemous fable and a dangerous deceit (Article 31). To say there is a conflict of interests here is to understate the case.
The "bad system" criticism which Dean MacCarthy levels at the Roman Church concerns not merely its non-consultative policy, but its wholesale departure from the word of God - which is the main reason there is an Anglican Church, from which he draws his stipend in the first place. - Yours, etc.,
Colin Maxwell, Briarscourt, Shanakiel, Cork.
