Sir, - Your interview with Dean MacCarthy of St Patrick's Cathedral and his proposal to allow the Cathedral to be used by Roman Catholics for worship brought to mind an incident which occurred at the time the Roman Catholic Church in Dun Laoghaire was destroyed by fire some years ago.
Shortly afterwards my wife and I were on holiday and took a taxi from Dublin to Dun Laoghaire. The driver proceeded to tell us all about the fire as if we didn't know. He went on to say that the curate (in the absence of the rector) of the Mariner's Church, Dun Laoghaire had offered the church to the parish priest for worship (not correct - he had offered the parish hall).
The driver went on to say: "You see, Sir, it wouldn't have worked. The Protestants would have used it in the morning and we would have had to have it blessed before we could have used it after them!"
How times have changed. - Yours, etc.,
Rev Canon James Pike,
Knockgreenan Avenue, Omagh, Co Tyrone.
