Sir, - On August 8th 1988, thousands of peacefully protesting students were brutally gunned down by the military in Burma. This massacre was much worse than what happened in Tiananmen Square the following year. As an acknowledgment of her part in Burma's struggle for democracy, the Freedom of Dublin City was conferred on Aung San Suu Kyi last March. On behalf of Burma Action-Ireland I would ask your readers to remember the sufferings of Burma on August 8th. On a practical note I would encourage them to write to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Brian Cowen, urging him to work for the immediate ban on trade, tourism and investment links between Burma and the EU.

This would be a concrete way to follow through the honour bestowed on this remarkable woman by the citizens of Dublin. - Yours, etc.,

Kathleen Forde, Secretary, Burma Action-Ireland, PO Box 6786, Dublin 14.
