Sir, - Considering the scale of the vicious slaughter taking place in East Timor as punishment against a totally defenceless people for having the temerity to vote in a democratic plebiscite for independence, is it not especially incumbent upon the British government to act decisively on their behalf? This moral imperative must flow from the reality of the British arms trade with Indonesia.
We hear repeatedly of the British government's resolve "to fight fascism" in Kosovo, of "human rights having no borders". This is an extremely laudable and humane programme. Will we see a reproduction of that determination, or will it be diluted and compromised by politics and money? - Yours, etc.,
Martin Maher, Galtymore Road, Drimnagh, Dublin 12.
