Madam, – We, the undersigned, like Maurice Neligan (HEALTHplus, July 27th) have had the privilege of spending most of our professional lives caring for sick children. Between us we have worked in all three Dublin children’s and maternity hospitals, in Irish regional and county hospitals and in many leading paediatric hospitals in North America, Australia and the UK.
We, like him, believe that placing the national paediatric hospital on the geographically constrained Mater site in Dublin’s city centre is not in the best interest of the sick children of Ireland. – Yours, etc,
Madam, – As a former member of CHILD (Children’s Hospital in Leukaemia Drive) I am impressed by the honesty, frankness, and integrity of your correspondent, Dr Maurice Neligan. Dr Neligan’s observations are correct and very close to the truth. Perhaps of considerable significance is that one of the experts consulted said that “Dublin’s three children’s hospital’s together are large enough to stand alone”.
Dr Neligan, reviewing his stance on the project says “this wasn’t about me, or the convenience of my colleagues, or prestigious and academic considerations. It was about the ‘little problems’, the sick children and what was best for them.”
In my opinion, Dr Neligan has reviewed this matter with significant understanding and I, as one who at one time represented seriously ill children, commend him for his courage, integrity and vision. Yours, etc,
