Sir, - Sean Webster (October 18th) takes a narrow meaning for the word "middle", namely "the half-point" or median. But think of middle class; middle-earth; Middle English; fair to middling; middlebrow; the Middle East; and the American Mid-West - are any of these half-way to anything? It's one of those terms that are subject to loss of focus, softening and expansion, just like us middle-aged people. - Yours, etc., Andrew Robinson,
Marlborough Road, Donnybrook, Dublin 4.
