Sir, - My mother was Irish, my father Belgian. He experienced the German invasion of 1914. We all - my parents, sister and I - suffered that of 1940. Ask the people of Dinant and Louvain, Burgomaster Max of Brussels, Nurse Edith Cavell and millions of Belgians: "Who died to preserve freedom and liberty?" This is not "children's textbook history," as Martin Clear (November 14th) called it. Knock Britain over her conduct towards Ireland but don't mock the Flanders poppy. - Yours, etc.,
Adrienne Wood,
Dunmanus West, Goleen, Co Cork.
