Sir, - I hasten to reassure Brenda Morgan of Howth (November 21st) that there is nothing profane about the term "Xmas". Quite the opposite. The X is actually the Greek letter chi', the first letter in the word "Christos", Greek for Christ. The abbreviation has been in use for a very long time, despite widespread misunderstanding in recent years. Charges of "taking Christ out of Christmas" should be laid at the door of the Americans with their dreadful Christmas greeting of "happy holidays". Let us exercise constant vigilance lest it, like all American ideas, should eventually find its way over here. - Yours, etc.,Paul Griffin,St Helens,Merseyside,England.
