Sir, – Prof Eugene O’Brien says that merging UCD and Trinity would create a world-class engineering department of 32 lecturers (September 27th).

What prevents the two departments from running joint programmes without the costly upheaval of merger? What makes him believe that an integrated department would retain all 32 posts? – Yours, etc,
