Sir, - The antics and accusations of swimmer Janet Evans has an uncanny similarity to that of another American in another Olympics. I recall how a barefooted South African, Zola Budd, was accused by her running rival, Mary Decker Slaney, of having tripped her during a race - despite the fact that the spiked shoed Slaney was slightly behind Budd at the time.
The totally innocent Budd could barely finish the race, while the hard done by Slaney lay in agony on the track side, waiting to be stretchered off. - Yours, etc,
