Sir, - Eoin Neeson (March 24th) is correct when he describes the proposed millennium spire as a "meaningless vulgarity", but he is hardly correct when he says it is "devoid of any significance". Unlike Eoin Neeson, I believe it should be built, for I can think of no other representation of our cultural identity and traditions which is likely to contain one tenth of the truth of this spire.

If art holds a mirror to us then we must complete this work of art and let it stand for the time when we as a people reflected on ourselves and chose this vacuous gesture as the most fitting expression of what we saw.
