Sir, - Now that mobile phone manufacturers have admitted for the first time that their products pose health risks to users, can we expect the companies which have erected masts all over Ireland for those same mobile phones to come out and admit that the masts also pose health risks?
A partner in Britain's biggest personal injury law firm (Thompsons) has been reported in the press as pursuing the first claims against mobile phone manufacturers to be launched in Britain. He described the situation as "a smoking gun" and said that it "could be the basis for future litigation which could run into billions of pounds."
Potential radiation risks are seemingly ignored in Ireland - ignored, or denied. A British biologist, Roger Coghill, has recently published research on alleged damage to the immune system caused by mobile phones.
The questions that need to be answered definitively are: (a) Are the masts "radiating systems"? (b) Are they a threat to health?
In a recent study on mobile phones themselves, scientists found up to 70 per cent of mobile emissions could be absorbed by the head to create "hot spots" in the brain. There have already been claims by users that they have suffered tumours, memory loss and damage to their immune systems. The implications are truly terrifying.
If such is the case with handsets, would someone, for pity's sake, let us know what the masts are doing to the health of those who live in their vicinity. - Yours, etc., Liam Nolan,
