Sir, - Kevin Myers was in paniconoclastic mode in his Irishman's Diary of November 14th.I leave the defence of Sartre and Dali to others. But I would like to offer a moderate defence of modern art in general. My Myers decries the fact that it is no longer necessary for art to resemble that which it depicts. Why must it resemble anything? Why must it depict anything? Can it not be something in itself? To the question "What is that a painting of?" The answer is: "It is not a painting of. It is just a painting." - Yours, etc.,Michael McGuire,Foylesprings,Derry.
