Madam, - The Irish Times must have the best newsprint of any daily paper; and your regular columnists and correspondents are surely unrivalled.
But it is in your page of leaders and Letters that I (and I believe many other readers) take particular daily interest and enjoyment.
So I hope you will allow me gently to suggest that on this page you frequently misuse the word "possible".
You write that letters should be short because it is not "possible to find room", etc. Madam, are there really not ways of finding more room: by reducing those vast photographs of faces or parts of faces; the pages devoted to the great god Sport and his accomplice Mammon; property, property, property (arguably the root of most evil); page-long special articles and multi-page supplements which could be shortened?
You will realise that I know nothing about running a newspaper. But I have enjoyed your paper daily, and daily wished for more letters space, for over 30 years.
So forgive me for getting it off my chest. - Yours, etc,
DAVID GIBBS, Bellmount, Cullahill, Co Laois.
