Sir, - I am writing to protest about the appalling increase in motor insurance costs in Ireland. I am one such victim, having just had an incredible 35.5 per cent increase on my premium. Neither I, nor my one named driver, have ever made a claim against our motor insurance (each of us has a clean sheet since 1962 when we first bought our cars), but we are apparently being loaded for the fact that we drive a two-litre car.
We are all aware that no car can go anywhere without its driver, and if that driver is a drunkard or a speed freak, then it is the driver, and not the car, that has to be the cause of an accident.
Incidentally, our broker admitted that if we changed our car to a 3.5-litre 4 x 4 Jeep (valued at four times the value of our existing vehicle) our insurance would drop by a massive £140. I wonder why. - Yours, etc.,
Adrian D'Alton, Butterfield Avenue, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14.
